حكايـــــة (Hekaya) 2023
By Shaikha Al Nasri, Aalya Sharaf, Nouf Ahmed AlNuaimi, and Dhabia Alhosani

حكايـــــة (Hekaya) is an innovative project that illuminates the rich history and communal spirit of Emirati desert life. This interactive device, inspired by age-old desert gatherings and oral storytelling, stands as a beacon of unity and a testament to the vibrant culture of the UAE. Picture a battery-powered beacon, glowing like a desert campfire and illuminating the sand around it with arabic calligraphy, beckoning people to gather. As you open the attached book, it comes to life, playing pre-recorded Emirati stories, bringing the past into the present. Drawing inspiration from the storytelling heritage of Emirati tribes, the art of eL Seed, and the familiar charm of record players, this project is more than an installation; it’s a bridge connecting generations, reviving lost tales, and celebrating the enduring spirit of the Emirati people. Join us in preserving and echoing the voices that have shaped the desert’s legacy. Be part of this mesmerizing experience where technology meets tradition, and every interaction is a step back in time.

Nouf Alnuaimi, Shaikha Alnasri, Aalya Sharaf, and Dhabia Alhosani, recent NYU Abu Dhabi graduates, are the creative minds behind Hekaya. With backgrounds in Interactive Media, they have drawn upon their Emirati heritage to design a piece that merges storytelling tradition with interactive technology.
